Off Season Ideas & Winter Services

   You can be sure that my suggestions, and recommendations are with the long haul in mind, and with maintenance concerns in mind as well. I never want to just "sell a plant" (or a bunch of plants) without doing my best to inform the customer, and consider maintenance issues, etc. Landscape contractors & horticultural service professionals do a lot of work eliminating "mistakes" in landscaping ... so I care a great deal about avoiding them in the beginning. That's one of the most valuable things I'll do for you, I believe. This is true in actual purchases of plant material, or helping you install material, or in the consultation services I offer.

   Fall is for planting ... plants establish bigger, stronger root systems over winter, even though the "tops" are dormant, or not apparent at all, as is the case with some perennials. Planting trees and shrubs in winter is a good thing !    

   First of all, you can find FALL COLOR ( besides mums ! ) to extend and broaden your garden and landscape show ... you can install this material now, enjoy it right away, and have an established, healthy plant ready to roll next spring. Secondly, fall is a good time to establish some new beds, and get your perennial plants & color in now.

   In general, to avoid the "it's all over" feeling that we sometimes get when fall arrives, and during winter, is one of the most helpful things you can do. To learn to install material at other times of year besides just the "spring fever" time, is a very valuable and helpful lesson. And often, you'll be saving a bit on the cost of the plants, due to "off-season" pricing. 

   Want to have the biggest, most beautiful Hostas, perennials, and ornamental trees possible next year ? Install them now !  I have several fine varieties in stock now.

   There is an almost endless list of things that, if done in fall / winter, actually pay off big for you during the next growing season. 

  • PLANTING TREES & SHRUBS NOW IS A GOOD THING ! 

  • Install perennials

  • Install flowering shrubs and trees for next year 

  • Prep and enrich soil in existing beds

  • Install FALL COLOR items

  • Certain pruning situations

  • Establish and improve borders

  • Prepare new bed areas

  • Make desired improvements / expansions to beds

  • Cleaning of difficult, or "unusable" areas for continued work in the spring.  

    All this can help you get a better start when the spring gardening fever hits ! 

    To design and "rough in" gardens, landscape features, water features, etc. can also give you a jump on things in the spring. 

     Design and maintenance consultations, if done in the off-season, can afford you a more pleasing situation in the spring as well.
